Beach-block parties: three things we plan for

Anything within a few blocks of the ocean has a personality, and it is windy. What we do about it:

• Weight everything light. Paper décor, place cards and napkins go under a plate, a shell or a clip. A runner gets tucked beneath the tabletop rather than draped. Balloons are the first thing to leave for the parking lot.
• Sand is a surface, not a floor. If the party is on a beach block or a dune-side deck, we set the table on the hardest surface available and level it on arrival. Tables on soft sand tilt within the hour.
• Shade before styling. A July afternoon in full sun empties a children's table in ten minutes. Under a tree, an umbrella or a canopy, the same table holds the children through cake. Check the forecast with PartyCast before you finalize the layout.

How much to book

Count children, not invitations, then add two seats. Twelve to sixteen children is two kid-height tables and fourteen to eighteen chairs; a first birthday with mostly adult guests is usually one table for six to eight cousins.
