Make-your-own pizza is the rare children's party activity that ends with everyone fed. It's also messier than people expect, and the difference between a great pizza party and a stressful one comes down to two decisions made in advance.
Decision one: dough
Pre-baked bases, not raw dough. Raw dough means twenty minutes of oven time per round, during which twelve children have nothing to do. Pre-baked mini bases go in for six minutes and come out crisp. Buy them, don't make them.
Decision two: protect the table
Kraft paper over the table, taped underneath. It catches flour and sauce, it rolls straight into the recycling at the end, and you can draw a plate-sized circle at each seat so children know where their pizza lives. It also doubles as the drawing surface while they wait.
The palette
Red, white and green with checkerboard — but keep the checks to one surface. Checkerboard runner and plain plates, or plain runner and checked napkins. Both and it starts to vibrate.
What we bring
Table height matters more here than at any other theme. Children need to press and spread from above, which they cannot do at adult table height. Kid-height tables and chairs turn a frustrating activity into a competent one.
Run of show
- 0–20 min: arrival, free play, drawing on the kraft paper.
- 20–35 min: topping stations. Sauce, cheese, three toppings. That's it.
- 35–50 min: bake in rounds while they eat salad, fruit and garlic bread.
- 50–65 min: eat, then cake.
Paper chef hats or aprons with each child's name are the single best-value favour at this theme — they wear them for the photos and take them home. Adapt our foam board props tutorial for the hat band.
