Little Builder Party

An activity-first theme — which is why it works so well for the three-to-six bracket.

Construction is one of the few themes where the activity carries the whole party. Children between three and six will build, unbuild and rebuild for far longer than they'll do almost anything else, which means you can plan a lighter schedule and let them get on with it.

The build table

This is the center of the party, and it needs to be at the right height. Children building at adult table height work with their arms above shoulder level, which tires them out in about four minutes. A kid-height table changes the whole session — they'll stay at it for half an hour.

Cover it in kraft paper, put out blocks or bricks in shallow trays rather than one big tub (one tub becomes one child's tub), and leave it out for the entire party rather than running it as a timed activity.

The palette

Construction yellow, black and gray works, but the warmer version — ochre, kraft, black and natural wood — photographs considerably better and doesn't fight the food. Caution tape as a single accent, not a wrapping.

Food that fits

• “Gravel” and “sand” snack bins: crushed cereal, graham crumbs, cheese cubes.
• Sandwiches cut into brick rectangles — genuinely faster than shapes and it fits the theme.
• A cake with a digger topper. One good topper beats an elaborate iced scene.

Details

Paper hard hats or tool belts with names, a “site rules” sign at the entrance, and each child's name on a hazard-stripe place card. Our place card method works with any card stock — swap the gold for hazard stripes.
