DIY Foam Board Party Props & Theme Cutouts

Part three of our foam board series — and the most fun one. Once you can cut clean shapes, foam board becomes a prop shop: oversized lollipops, rocket ships, crowns, palm trees, race flags, photo props — whatever your theme dreams up.

What you'll need

• Foam board in white and/or your palette colors
• Craft knife, spare blades, ruler, cutting mat
• Acrylic paints and brushes or foam rollers
• Wooden dowels or paint sticks (for handheld props)
• Hot glue (low setting) and foam tape
• A pencil and any round objects in the kitchen for tracing curves

Idea 1: Handheld photo props

Cut simple silhouettes — stars, hearts, crowns, mustaches, speech bubbles — and glue a dowel to the back of each. Set them in a pretty basket near the party's photo corner and the entertainment takes care of itself.

Idea 2: Giant theme silhouettes

Every theme has one iconic shape: a sailboat for a nautical party, a daisy for a garden party, a checkered flag for race day. Cut it two or three feet tall, paint it flat in one or two colors, and lean or mount it beside the dessert table. Flat, graphic shapes photograph better than fussy detailed ones.

Idea 3: Standing table toppers

Small cutouts get a triangle foot: cut a right-triangle of scrap board, score one edge, fold the flap and glue it to the back of your shape — the same way picture frames stand. Perfect for numbers marking a first, second or third birthday down the center of the kids' table.

Idea 4: Oversized sweets

The stylist favorite: giant lollipops (a painted swirl circle on a thick dowel wrapped in cellophane), popsicles, and ice cream cones clustered in buckets flanking the dessert cart. Pure candy-shop fantasy for a fraction of the boutique-prop price.

Make them last

Foam board props survive multiple parties if you store them flat, out of sunlight, with tissue between painted pieces. Build a little collection over time and every future party starts half-styled already.

Our styling note

Props sing when they have a beautiful stage. Cluster them around the anchor moments — the kids' table, the cake, the dessert cart — rather than scattering them thin around the room. Concentration is what makes a party look designed.
