DIY Luxe Picnic Party for Kids

The luxe kids' picnic — low table, floor cushions, dappled light — might be the most requested party look of the past few years, and for good reason: it photographs like a dream, it costs less than a venue, and children are never more relaxed than when the party happens at ground level.
It's also the look most likely to fall apart by cake time when it's styled for the photo instead of the child. The difference is five decisions, all below.

How to make it
Set the low table and define the space
Every picnic party needs a floor and a table. The floor: a large flat-woven rug or two overlapping blankets, which mark the party's boundary and save small knees from damp grass. The table: kid-height and low, set in the rug's center. Build cushion seating
Ring the table with one cushion per child — floor cushions, patio cushions or bed pillows in linen cases, spaced evenly so every guest has an obvious place. Odd numbers cluster prettier than tight symmetry. For mixed-age parties, put the youngest guests on the side facing the adults' table; toddler extraction is easier from the near side.
Anchor a runner and settings
A cloth runner down the center makes the whole picture — and outdoors it must be clipped under the table edge or weighted at both ends, or it becomes a kite. Set each place kid-proof and pretty: enamel or bamboo plates (never glass on the grass), lidded cups, and a napkin tied with ribbon. Style the centerpiece low and sturdy

Zone the food away from the table
Serve from a side table or the dessert cart a few steps off the rug, and carry plates to the picnic.
