A children's Christmas party has a rhythm of its own: an activity at the table, a visitor everyone has been waiting for, and a sugar high carefully timed for the end. All three go better with furniture that fits the guests. At child height, cookie decorating stays on the table instead of the floor, and a row of little chairs turns a living room into an audience.

The cookie-decorating table

It's the activity that reliably holds a room of four- to eight-year-olds for half an hour. Set it up like this:

• One place per child with a square of parchment, two or three plain sugar cookies and a small paper cup of sprinkles.
• Icing in squeeze bottles, not bowls and knives — one bottle per color, shared between two children.
• A kraft-paper runner down the middle that can be rolled up and thrown away afterward.
• A take-home box at every seat, so the finished cookies leave with their decorator.

Seat the youngest at the ends where a parent can help, and keep extra cookies back for the child who eats their first batch.

A visit-from-Santa setup

Put one adult armchair against the wall or beside the tree, then arc the children's chairs in a semicircle in front of it, two rows if you have more than a dozen guests. Everyone gets a clear view, nobody stands on the sofa, and the photographs have a proper composition. Afterwards, the same chairs slide back to the table for cake. A dessert cart parked nearby holds cocoa cups and the treat bags Santa hands out.

Two palettes that always work

• Red and green, grown up. Natural rattan chairs, a cream table, a deep green runner and red gingham napkins. Add clementines and a few sprigs of pine; skip the cartoon plates.
• White winter. White tables and chairs, silver and pale blue accents, paper snowflakes and a simple garland. It reads calm and elegant, and it carries straight into a January birthday. For a cozier take, our après-ski winter theme swaps icy tones for warm ones and adds a hot chocolate bar.

Christmas kids' table ideas for the family dinner

Not every Christmas setup is a party. The one families ask about most is simply the kids' table at Christmas dinner: a kid-height table set right beside the adults' table, the same linens and greenery at a smaller scale, and chairs the children's feet can reach. The cousins eat at the same time as everyone else, and nobody balances a plate on a lap. Add a high chair at the corner closest to the grown-ups for a baby's first Christmas, and lay coloring placemats at every seat for the stretch between dinner and dessert. Timing, and when to book

Christmas falls on a Friday, December 25 this year, so the weekends of December 12–13 and December 19–20 carry most of the season's parties — and December weekends go first. Two hours is plenty for young children: arrival and an activity, then the visitor, then food and cookies to go. Late-December afternoons go dark early, so plan warm lamp light for anything after four.
