Carnival is the most scalable theme here. The structure — a set of stations children move between at their own pace — works identically for eight children and eighty, which is why it's the go-to for joint parties and school events.
The stations
Three to five is right. More than five and half of them sit unused; fewer than three and queues form. Each needs to be genuinely five minutes or less:
- Ring toss — bottles and rings. The most reliable one.
- Bean bag throw — a foam board with holes cut in it. See foam board props.
- Duck pond — for the under-fours, who can't do the aiming games.
- Face painting or tattoos — the one with the longest queue, so staff it.
- Prize table — small, and everyone wins. Tickets exchanged at the end, not per game.
The palette
Red and white stripes with cream and a warm yellow. Stripes on one surface — the backdrop or the runner. Bunting overhead does more for the carnival feel than anything at table level, because it's what people see when they walk in.
Food that fits
Popcorn boxes, hot dogs, cotton candy, lemonade. This is the one theme where classic carnival food is the correct answer and anything more refined feels off-message. Popcorn boxes with names double as favour bags at the end.
