Citrus is the best value theme on this list by a distance. A crate of lemons and oranges costs less than a single decor package and does more work than most of them — it's centrepiece, color scheme and food at once.

The palette

Lemon yellow, orange, white and a strong green, on a cream or white base. The green matters — citrus without foliage reads as plastic. A few sprigs of eucalyptus or lemon leaf between the fruit is what makes it look like a garden rather than a supermarket display.

The decor is the fruit

• Whole lemons and oranges piled in shallow bowls, in odd numbers, at three heights.

Food that fits

Lemonade, obviously — and make it a station rather than a jug. Children pouring their own from a dispenser at their own height is an activity in itself. Add lemon bars, orange segments, and a plain cake with a citrus and greenery topper.
