Long-Weekend Birthdays: the NJ Dates Nobody Books
Two long weekends land back to back this fall in New Jersey, and almost nobody books a party on the extra days. Here is why a Sunday-evening or Monday-morning birthday is the easiest party you will ever host.

Every family we deliver to is fighting the same calendar. Saturday afternoon in October is the single most contested slot in New Jersey: soccer, a bar mitzvah, two other birthdays, a cousin's christening and the one grandparent who can only come at four. Parents move heaven and earth to win that slot, pay a premium for it, and then spend the party apologizing to the eleven families who could not make it.
Meanwhile, twice this fall, New Jersey hands those same families an entire extra day off and almost nobody uses it.
The two long weekends
Mark these on the family calendar now:
- Columbus Day — Monday, October 12, 2026. Most New Jersey public districts close, as do the majority of private and parochial schools. That makes Saturday the tenth, Sunday the eleventh and Monday the twelfth all available, and only one of the three is fought over.
- The NJEA Convention break — Thursday and Friday, November 5 and 6, 2026. New Jersey's teachers' convention closes most public districts for two weekdays, which turns Wednesday evening through Sunday the eighth into a four-day stretch. Parents who take the Thursday and Friday off anyway are already home.
Calendars vary district by district, so confirm your own school's before you send invitations — but across Monmouth, Ocean, Bergen, Middlesex and Mercer counties these two breaks are close to universal, which is exactly what makes them useful. Your guests' children are off school on the same days yours are. Hosting the NJEA weekend in central Jersey? Our Edison & Highland Park kids' table and chair rental guide covers Thursday and Friday deliveries across Middlesex County, and our Westfield, Cranford & Summit guide does the same for Union County. Anywhere else in New Jersey, our kids table and chair rentals page covers Election Day (Tuesday, November 3) and NJEA-weekend deliveries, and Monmouth County families can start with Monmouth County kids' party rentals.
Why the extra day is the better party
A Sunday-evening or Monday-morning party is not a consolation prize. It is a measurably easier party, for five reasons we see every week.
Your guest list actually comes. Nothing competes on a Monday of a long weekend. No travel sports, no other birthdays, no obligations. The RSVP rate on an off-peak date is the highest we see all year, and the families who come are not rushing off to the next thing at two o'clock.
Venues and vendors are open. We deliver 365 days a year, and so do most of the bakeries, balloon stylists and entertainers worth hiring. On a Saturday in October every good vendor in the state is triple-booked; on the Monday they are free, unhurried and able to arrive early. If you have ever had a setup crew ask you to move things along, you will appreciate the difference.
Late-morning parties suit small children better. A ten or eleven o'clock start on a school-free Monday catches toddlers and preschoolers at their best, before the nap and before the sugar. Our guide to 2- and 3-year-old parties makes the same case: the party that works is the one scheduled around the child, not the calendar.
Weather odds are good and the light is beautiful. Mid-October in New Jersey is the last reliable outdoor window, and early November gives you that low gold afternoon light photographers love. Keep an eye on the local forecast and have a rain plan ready either way.
You get the house back before the week starts. This is the quiet one. A Sunday-evening party means Monday is for recovering. A Monday-morning party means the house is clear by mid-afternoon and your Tuesday is normal. Because every rental we send out includes next-day pickup, nobody in your family stacks a chair.
Four formats that suit a long weekend
The Monday pajama brunch. Ten o'clock, waffles and fruit on the dessert cart, children in pajamas, grown-ups with coffee. It is the lowest-effort beautiful party there is, and a kid-height table set with rattan chairs makes it look intentional rather than improvised. Our brunch planning guide has the run of show.
The Sunday-evening cake-and-cocoa party. Four-thirty to six-thirty, before bedtime, after everyone's day is done. Short, warm and genuinely festive in the dark. Hot cocoa on the cart, blankets on the lawn, and home by seven.
The orchard-and-back party. Families drive out to a farm in the morning and come back to a styled table for lunch and cake. The pumpkins they picked become the centerpiece — see our no-carve pumpkin decorating party plan — and the cider-donut tower does the rest.
The two-family joint party. Long weekends are when the out-of-town cousins are already in New Jersey. Two birthdays, one table, half the work. Our guide to a joint birthday party for two children covers how to keep both children feeling like the birthday child.
Booking the quiet days
The practical notes we give families booking these dates:
- Send invitations three weeks out, not two. People do not expect a party on a Monday, so they need a beat to realize they are free. Say the words "school is closed" on the invitation.
- Count children, not families, then add two. Long-weekend parties attract siblings who would otherwise be elsewhere. The arithmetic is in our guide to how many chairs and tables you need, and our heights-by-age guide covers which table suits which ages.
- Ask for a day-before setup. On an off-peak date this is almost always possible. Having the table styled the night before changes the morning entirely.
- Reserve the furniture first. Our rattan kids' chair collection is the one that sells out for fall dates, long weekend or not. Browse the party themes to settle the palette, then lock the date.
The same logic runs straight through the winter. Thanksgiving weekend, the December break and the days around New Year's all hand you dates nobody else wants. Our holiday party rentals page has the December calendar, and December weekends do book first.
Where we deliver
Mini Chairs Atelier delivers, sets up and picks up children's tables, chairs and dessert carts across New Jersey and New York, and we are open every day of the year — long weekends very much included. Send your date, your address and a rough child count through Get a Quote and we will confirm availability the same day. If you are still choosing the weekend, our planning timeline works backwards from any date you pick, and our fall party ideas cover the styling.
Frequently asked questions
Are New Jersey schools closed on Columbus Day 2026?
Columbus Day falls on Monday, October 12, 2026, and most New Jersey public districts close, along with the majority of private and parochial schools. Calendars do vary by district, so confirm your own before you send invitations — but across Monmouth, Ocean, Bergen, Middlesex and Mercer counties the closure is close to universal.
What is the NJEA convention break?
The New Jersey Education Association holds its annual convention in early November, and most public districts close for it. In 2026 that falls on Thursday, November 5 and Friday, November 6, which gives families a four-day stretch running through Sunday, November 8.
Do you deliver kids' party rentals on a Monday or a weekday?
Yes. We are open 365 days a year and weekday deliveries are among the easiest we do — roads are quieter, the setup crew is unhurried and a day-before setup is almost always available on an off-peak date.
Is a morning birthday party better for young children?
For toddlers and preschoolers, usually yes. A ten or eleven o'clock start catches them before the nap and before the sugar, which is why the long-weekend pajama brunch works so well. School-age children generally do better with a late-afternoon or early-evening slot.
How far ahead should I book for a long-weekend date?
Three to four weeks is comfortable for the furniture, and three weeks is the sweet spot for invitations — people need an extra beat to realize they are free on a Monday. The rattan collection is the first to sell out for fall dates, so reserve that before you finalize anything else.
