How Many Kids' Chairs and Tables Do You Need for Your Party?
It is the first question almost every parent asks us, and the answer is simpler than it looks. Count the right children, add two, and pick a layout that fits the room. Here is the whole method, with the numbers we use every weekend.
Whether it is a first birthday in the living room or a backyard party for a whole kindergarten class, the seating question comes down to three numbers: how many children will sit, how much table each child needs, and how much floor you have. Get those right and cake time runs itself — every child has a seat, nobody is perched on a grown-up's knee, and the photos look like a party instead of a scramble.
Step 1: count the children who will actually sit
Not every child on the guest list needs a chair. A good working count:
- Under one: usually on a lap or in a stroller. The exception is the birthday baby, who gets a high chair at the head of the table.
- Ages 1 to 3: they need a seat at a low table, and they need it for longer than you expect — toddlers sit for snack, for cake and again for the craft.
- Ages 4 to 10: the core of the kids' table. Count every one.
- Ages 11 and up: many prefer to stand with the grown-ups or sit at the adult table. Ask the parents; if in doubt, count them at the adult table.
Then add two seats. A cousin brings a friend, a neighbor's child wanders over, a sibling who was meant to stay home comes after all. An empty chair at the end of the table is never a problem; a missing one is.
Step 2: give each child enough table
Children need less table than adults, but not as little as people think once there is a plate, a cup and a coloring sheet in front of them. A comfortable rule of thumb is roughly 18 to 20 inches of table edge per child, a little more for big kids with a craft. Toddlers squeeze closer; that is fine for snack, less fine for painting.
Two of our tables as examples: the hand-painted Daisy Table is 36 inches across and fits five chairs, a cozy round for the youngest guests. The Mini Scalloped Oval Table is 75 by 30 inches, a long table that seats a row of children down both sides. Height matters as much as length — our table and chair heights by age guide shows which size fits a two-year-old and which fits an eight-year-old.
Step 3: pick a layout for your number
Up to 10 children
One long kids' table, or two smaller tables pushed end to end. Everyone is in one scene for the candles, which is what you want for the photo. In a small living room, a round table for five plus a second round for the rest works better than one long table across the room.
10 to 20 children
A long row of tables or a U-shape. The U is wonderful outdoors: the open end faces the cake table or the dessert cart, so every child can see the candles without leaving their seat. Indoors, two parallel tables with a walking lane between them usually fit a basement or a party room better than a single very long one.
20 to 30 children (or more)
Split by age. Give the toddlers their own lower table near the parents, and the big kids a longer table where there is room for a craft. Two or three separate tables also calm the room down — thirty children at one table is loud in a way that three tables of ten are not.
Step 4: check the room
- Leave walking room. About three feet around the kids' tables lets parents reach in with plates and phones without squeezing past chairs.
- Keep a sightline. If there is a dessert cart or a cake table, the children's table should face it.
- Think about the floor. We set up on grass, patios, decks, carpet and hardwood every weekend, and we make sure every chair sits steady. If the lawn slopes, tell us and we will place the table on the flattest part.
- Plan a rain spot. Kid-height tables fit in a garage, a basement or a living room; decide on the backup space before the day.
Quick answers for common guest counts
- 8 kids at a first birthday: 8 children plus the birthday baby in a high chair, plus 2 spare seats — one long table or two rounds.
- 15 kids at a backyard birthday: 17 chairs; a long row or a U-shape facing the cake.
- 25 kids at a class party: about 27 chairs across two or three tables, toddlers and siblings at their own table.
- Thanksgiving or a holiday dinner: seating by age matters even more with cousins of every size — see the big-family Thanksgiving kids' table seating plan.
Let us do the math
Send us your date, the number of children and where the party is, and we will recommend the exact tables and chairs — it is what we do every weekend across New Jersey and New York. We deliver, set up before your guests arrive and pick everything up afterward. Browse the collections on the kids' table and chair rentals page, see the first birthday party rentals page for the high chair setup, or hold your date while you finish the guest list.
We're not the party planners — we rent the kids' tables, chairs and dessert carts. Your planner or your family handles the styling; we make sure every little guest has a seat their size.
Frequently asked questions
How many kids' chairs should I rent for a party?
Count the children who will sit — usually ages one to ten — and add two extra chairs. Babies usually stay on laps, except the birthday baby, who gets a high chair.
How many children fit at one kids' table?
Allow roughly 18 to 20 inches of table edge per child. Our Daisy Table, 36 inches across, fits five chairs; a long table like the 75-by-30-inch Mini Scalloped Oval seats a row of children down both sides.
What is the best kids' table layout for 15 to 20 children?
A long row or a U-shape. Outdoors, point the open end of the U at the cake table or dessert cart so every child can see the candles from their seat.
Should toddlers and older kids sit at the same table?
For more than about twenty children, split them. Toddlers do best at their own lower table near the parents; older kids need a longer table with room for a craft.
Can you tell me exactly what to rent?
Yes. Send your date, child count and venue, and we will recommend the tables and chairs. We deliver, set up and pick up across NJ and NY.
