DIY Ribbon Chair Sashes for a Children's Party

The fastest way to dress a room is to dress the chairs. A simple ribbon sash turns every little seat into part of the décor — five minutes per chair, no sewing, and it photographs beautifully down the whole length of the table.

What you'll need

• 2–3 yards of ribbon per chair — satin, chiffon, velvet or grosgrain, 1.5–3 inches wide
• Sharp scissors
• Optional: faux greenery or a single silk flower for the birthday chair

Step 1: Choose the tie style

Three looks, all easy: a classic back bow tied on the chair back like a gift; a side drape knotted at one corner with tails hanging long; or streamer tails — two or three ribbons in your palette knotted together, ends trailing, which flutter sweetly outdoors.

Step 2: Cut once, measure once

Tie your first sash, adjust until you love it, then untie and measure that ribbon — that's your master length. Cut the rest of the set to match and every chair comes out identical.

Step 3: Tie with the bow facing out

Wrap the ribbon around the chair back, tie the bow facing the direction guests and cameras see, and fluff the loops so they stand rather than droop. Trim ribbon ends on a diagonal or in a swallowtail V so they never fray mid-party.

Step 4: One accent, maximum

Tuck a single sprig of eucalyptus or one silk bloom into the knot on the birthday child's chair only — a subtle "throne" moment that makes the guest of honor easy to spot in every photo.
