Hanukkah Kids’ Table Ideas: Eight Nights, One Beautiful Little Table

Hanukkah is eight nights of family dinners, and at least one of them usually turns into the big one — cousins, grandparents, a table of children who need somewhere to sit that isn’t the floor. Across Bergen, Monmouth, Brooklyn, Long Island and the Main Line, a proper kids’ table is one of our most-requested December setups. Here’s how to make it beautiful and, just as importantly, workable with latkes, candles and a lot of little hands.

A blue and silver palette that feels warm

Blue and white is the traditional Hanukkah palette, and the trick to keeping it from feeling icy is to add one warm layer: natural rattan chairs, a wood table, cream linens instead of stark white, or gold accents alongside the silver. A navy runner on a natural rattan table with white chairs and a few silver-foil dreidels scattered down the center is our favorite version — festive, classic and not a snowflake in sight.

Place settings that survive latkes

Latkes and sufganiyot are oily, sugary and beloved, so plan the kids’ table for it. Use a wipeable tablecloth or placemats under cloth napkins, real plates only for children over six, and a small cup of applesauce at each seat so no one is reaching across. A coloring placemat with a menorah to fill in (one candle per night) keeps little ones busy while the adults linger.

The dreidel station

Set a small side table or a dessert cart as the dreidel station: a few wooden dreidels, a bowl of gelt, a bowl of nuts for the little ones who can’t have chocolate yet, and a printed card with the rules for the cousins who’ve forgotten. It gives children a reason to leave the table between courses and a reason to come back.

Candles and children

The menorah belongs on the adults’ table or a windowsill, never the kids’ table. If you want the children to have their own, an LED menorah at the center of their table gives them the ritual without the flame. Keep the kids’ table at least a few feet from the lit menorah and away from any tablecloth edge a child could pull.

Gifts at the table

If the big night includes presents, a small wrapped gift at each child’s place works better than a pile. It doubles as the place card, it stops the scramble, and everyone opens together after dinner. Blue and silver paper with a simple white ribbon keeps the table looking styled until the moment they’re opened.

What to rent

For eight to sixteen children, one or two kid-height tables with matching chairs is the standard setup; add a dessert cart for the sufganiyot and the dreidel station.
