DIY Paper-Bag Woodland Puppets for a Birthday Party

A fox with enormous ears, an owl with sleepy eyes, a bear wearing imaginary spectacles: paper-bag puppets leave room for each child's ideas. They also give a party craft a second act. Once the glue is dry, guests can use their characters in a short birthday story before taking them home.

Time and quantity: For eight puppets, allow 30 minutes of adult preparation and 20–30 minutes for decorating, followed by drying time according to the glue label. Prepare one finished sample.

Materials for eight guests

1. Find the puppet's face

Lay a bag flat with its folded bottom facing up and the open end pointing toward you. The rectangular bottom flap becomes the face. Slip your hand inside to see how the flap moves before decorating it. Draw a tiny pencil mark on the front so you do not accidentally build the character on the back.

2. Make a simple paper pattern

Trace the face flap onto scrap paper. Use that rectangle to check the size of two triangular fox ears, two rounded bear ears or an owl's face patch. Give each ear a small extra tab at its base for gluing. Keep pieces large and easy to handle; a few clear shapes work better than a tray of tiny details.

3. Attach the large shapes

Glue the ear tabs behind the top edge of the face flap. Add a face patch if wanted, keeping glue away from the flap's hinge. Do not glue the flap to the bag underneath it. Test its movement gently before the glue sets. A character with a stuck mouth can still become a perfectly lovely drawing, so keep a spare bag available without making mistakes feel important.

4. Draw the personality

Draw eyes, a nose and whiskers directly on the paper. Add a scarf or patterned tummy on the lower bag. Skip buttons, beads, feathers and stick-on eyes. Children can invent an animal rather than matching the sample. For guests who prefer coloring, provide bags with the larger shapes already attached.

5. Dry, then rehearse

Put each puppet on a labeled drying space. Once ready, show guests how to support the face with their fingers and move it gently. Paper bags tear if pulled hard. Keep bags away from faces and heads, supervise play, and offer a drawing activity for children who still mouth materials.

6. Give the puppets a small adventure

An adult might begin, “Someone has misplaced the birthday invitation.” Invite willing guests to introduce a helper, choose a route or make an animal sound. Nobody needs to perform alone. A five-minute story is enough before another activity begins. Lay finished puppets flat for the journey home, with guests' names inside the openings.

Keep scissors in the adult preparation area and check rental-provider rules before using glue at rented tables. Our storybook birthday guide offers a setting for the puppets' first adventure.
