Monmouth County First Birthday Furniture Rentals
A first birthday is really a party for everyone except the guest of honor. Here is how Monmouth County families set it up — the seating the older children actually need, where the smash cake goes, and the timing that keeps a one-year-old in a good mood.

Every family plans a first birthday twice. The first plan is for the baby — the smash cake, the milestone banner, the outfit change. The second plan, the one that actually decides how the afternoon goes, is for everyone else: the four-year-old cousins, the neighbors' children, the toddlers who arrive mid-nap and the grandparents who want to sit somewhere they can see the baby. Across Monmouth County we deliver to that second plan constantly, and it almost always comes down to one question — where do the other children sit?
This guide is the first-birthday version of our Monmouth County venue guide: what to rent when the guest of honor is one, how many seats to count, where to put the cake, and the delivery details that matter in Freehold, Red Bank, Middletown, Colts Neck and along the shore.
The one-year-old barely uses the furniture — and that is the point
Here is the honest truth about first birthdays: the birthday child spends most of the party in someone's arms. A one-year-old is not going to sit through a meal at a little table. What the furniture does is organize everyone around the baby. A kid-height table with six or eight small chairs gives the two-to-six-year-old guests somewhere to land, which keeps them off the sofa, out of the gift pile and away from the dessert table. It gives the photographer a clean foreground. And it gives the baby a place to be set down for the cake moment at their own scale, which is why the photographs from a low table look so different from the ones taken in a highchair.
If you are still sketching the room, our first-birthday seating and layout guide has the floor plans; this page is about what to reserve.
How many seats a Monmouth County first birthday actually needs
First birthdays skew adult-heavy — it is the one party where both sides of the family come — so the child count is usually smaller than a fifth birthday and much harder to predict. Our rule after hundreds of these:
- Count children aged one to eight, not families. That is who will use the little chairs. Older siblings sit with the adults by eight or nine.
- Add two seats. Someone always brings a cousin.
- One kid-height table seats six to eight. Ten or more children means two tables, and two tables end to end look far better than two islands in a living room.
- Leave one chair empty on purpose near the cake for the baby's own seat in photos.
For a typical Freehold or Middletown first birthday of eight to twelve small guests, that is one or two tables and ten to fourteen chairs. Our quantity guide works through the math for larger gatherings.
Choosing the look: neutral now, themed later
First birthdays photograph in a way later birthdays do not — these pictures go on the wall, into the album and into the grandparents' frames. That pushes most Monmouth families toward something quiet. The rattan kids' chair collection is the one we are asked for most for a first birthday: natural woven chairs beside linen, a wood table and a few stems of greenery age well in a photograph, and they sit comfortably in a Rumson dining room or on a Colts Neck lawn without shouting.
When there is a theme, keep it on the paper and the backdrop rather than the furniture. A Wild One safari arch with natural wood chairs underneath reads as styled; the same arch with four colors of plastic seating reads as a rental pile. Our guide to choosing chairs for a theme covers the pairings, and the Sweet One pastel and Citrus Garden theme pages show the two palettes that come up most for ones.
The smash cake corner
Plan this as its own small station and the party runs itself. Put the smash cake on a dessert cart or a low table against a clean wall, with the high chair or a single little chair in front of it and nothing else in frame. Two practical notes from years of setups: put a washable mat or a flattened box under the chair before the cake comes out, and do the smash before the meal if the party starts near a nap, not after. A tired one-year-old will not perform for anyone.
For the rest of the dessert table, our dessert cart styling guide and the handprint keepsake and first-birthday time capsule tutorials give you a keepsake activity for the older guests while the cake happens.
Venues and homes across the county
Most Monmouth first birthdays happen at home, and homes here vary enormously — a Red Bank rowhouse dining room, a Middletown split-level great room, a Colts Neck lawn, a beach-club room in Sea Bright. What we plan for:
- At home, measure the room before the guest list closes. A kid-height table needs about four feet by three feet plus room to pull chairs out. Our small-space guide has the layouts that work in a tight living room.
- At a restaurant or a club, ask what they allow before you book furniture. Many Monmouth venues are happy to have a children's table in a corner of a private room; a few will not move their own tables.
- Outdoors in September and October — peak season here — check the local forecast as the date approaches and have the indoor version of the same layout ready. Our rain-plan guide walks through the swap.
First birthdays book earlier than any other party we do — often three months out, because the date is fixed by a birthday and the family is traveling in. If your date falls on a Sunday between April and June or September and October, reserve as soon as you have a venue.
Delivery and setup in Monmouth County
Every rental includes delivery, full setup and next-day pickup — you never unfold, wipe or stack anything, which matters more at a first birthday than at any other party, because you are holding a baby. We deliver across Freehold, Manalapan, Marlboro, Colts Neck, Middletown, Holmdel, Red Bank, Rumson, Ocean Township, Long Branch, Deal and the rest of the county, and we are open 365 days a year (the full town list is on our kids' party rentals in Monmouth County page). Send your date, address and approximate child count through Get a Quote and we will confirm availability the same day. Planning at the shore or in a neighboring town? Our guides to Rumson, Red Bank & Fair Haven, Middletown & Holmdel and Ocean Township & Asbury Park have the neighborhood specifics.
Frequently asked questions
What do I actually need to rent for a first birthday?
One kid-height table and six to eight little chairs covers most first birthdays, because the guests using them are the older cousins and neighbors rather than the baby. Add a second table if you expect ten or more children under eight, and a dessert cart if the smash cake is the centerpiece.
Does the one-year-old sit in a rental chair?
Usually only for photographs. Our chairs suit children who sit steadily on their own, roughly 18 months and up; most families use a high chair for the meal and a little chair for the cake picture with a parent right there.
How far ahead should I book a first birthday in Monmouth County?
Two to three months is normal here, and longer for spring and fall Sundays. First-birthday dates cannot move, so families book as soon as the venue is settled — the Atelier Rattan collection goes first.
Can you set up at a restaurant or a beach club?
Yes, with the venue's permission. Tell us the venue when you request a quote and we will work to their access and timing rules; we deliver, set up and return the next day, so nothing is left for you or the staff to handle.
Do you deliver to Red Bank, Freehold and the shore towns?
Yes — all of Monmouth County is inside our regular delivery area, along with the rest of New Jersey and New York. Delivery, setup and next-day pickup are included on every order.
