How to Make a DIY Balloon Garland for a Kids' Party

A balloon garland is the single most transformative decoration you can add to a children's party — it turns a plain wall into a photo backdrop, frames a dessert table beautifully, and makes even a simple setup feel like a styled event. Professional installations often run $300–$600, but with an afternoon and about $40 in supplies, you can build one at home that looks remarkably close.
What You'll Need
- 60–100 latex balloons in 2–3 coordinating colors (mix of 5", 10" and a few 18" sizes)
- Balloon decorating strip (a plastic tape with holes — sold in rolls online or at party stores)
- A handheld balloon pump (your lungs will thank you)
- Glue dots for filler balloons
- Clear removable hooks (like Command hooks) and fishing line or string
Step 1: Choose a palette that matches your theme
Pick one main color, one softer supporting shade, and one accent. For a blush-and-gold celebration, that might be pastel pink, cream and metallic gold. Tone-on-tone palettes (three shades of the same color) photograph beautifully and always look intentional — it's the trick behind that "professionally styled" feeling.
Step 2: Inflate balloons in varied sizes
This is the secret most first-timers miss: a great garland is all about size variation. Inflate roughly 60% of your balloons to full size, 30% to medium, and keep 10% small. The small ones fill gaps later and give the garland its lush, organic, cloud-like shape. Don't over-inflate — slightly under-filled balloons are softer looking and pop far less.
Step 3: Thread balloons onto the strip
Push each balloon's knot through a hole in the decorating strip, alternating colors and sizes as you go. Work in a random pattern rather than a strict repeat — true randomness reads as "designer" while strict patterns read as "supermarket." A 6-foot garland uses roughly 50–60 balloons.
Step 4: Hang it before you perfect it
Mount your hooks, then hang the garland with string through the strip's end holes. Let it drape naturally — a gentle arc or an asymmetric sweep down one side of the table looks more elegant than a perfectly straight line. Only once it's hanging should you judge where the gaps are.
Step 5: Fill gaps and add magic
Use glue dots to tuck your smallest balloons into any holes. Then add the finishing touches that make it feel custom: a few silk flowers tucked between balloons, greenery sprigs, or a couple of oversized 18" balloons at the focal point. This last 15 minutes is where the garland goes from nice to gasp-worthy.
Where to place it
- Behind the kids' table — it frames the little guests perfectly in every photo.
- Over the dessert cart — a garland arcing above a dessert display is a classic for a reason.
- Around a doorway — an instant grand entrance for the birthday child.
One styling note from our events: garlands look their absolute best when the furniture underneath deserves the spotlight too. A beautiful balloon arc over a mismatched folding table loses half its effect — over a scalloped kids' table with coordinating chairs, it's pure magic.
